Gearbox T5 problems, update to fit RX8 6 speed box

Post by Don Ricardo » Sat Oct 20, 2018 4:57 pm

Don Ricardo here, I have major geardox problems, the box is stuck in 1st gear and try as I may I cannot get it out. So after discusion with a local gearbox specialist|||, I have decided to change tack after hearing about a conversion/adapter plate to fit a Mazda RX8 6 speed gearbox. Apparently it's straight forwad as all that needs adapting is the prop shaft. My question is has anyone done this and what are the pit falls if any. So have decided to go Mazda way it appears to be cheaper, RX8 gearbox has arrived as has the adapter plate, trial fits of adapter plte to engine and to gearbox went great, starter moter fits adapter plate, but not gearbox bellhousing, that needs a slight modification, also RX8 bellhousing needs a blanking plate to cover Mazda starter motor hole. Securing bolts required :- M10 x 40 6 of countersink head, M10 x 100 1 of; M10 x 60 7 of hex or allen key head, M10 nylock nuts as required. One good thing the gearbox arrived with the splined prop shaft end as this is 38mm dia and the ford is 34mm so it is required.
Thats as far as I have got, photo's to be added within next few days.

Mine seems to hit the clutch slave cylinder too - apparently there’s a Mazda slave that fits. I went for the 5 speed, ratios look better for the Scimitar.

Mazda RX-8 has a electronic speedo.

So you'll need to source something Else.

I also went down this route before doing the omega conversion. I have the 5 speed box, adaptor plate and, both types of prop, scimitar, and rx8. Both props fit the box, but the scimitar has narrower diameter nose. I was on the cusp of having a bush made to press in the back of the Mazda box to take up the extra diameter, then using a standard scimitar / Ford rear oil seal and prop. I mocked it up on a spare Essex, it all fitted beautifully. Standard. Essex flywheel, clutch, pressure plate. I was adapting to cable paddle. There is a method shown on the Facebook site.

Is we sideways yet...

Gearbox T5 problems, update to fit RX8 6 speed box

Sorry for the delay, have now got a health problem, so having to take things easy for a while. Anyway back to the gearbox, I have used the RX8 yolk and had it reamed out to take the Scimitar UJ (26.89mm), I am now waiting for the clutch kit (3 part) to turn up, then it's assemble the engine and earbox and offer them up into the car, measure the prop shaft and send it off to be modified,(By my calculations the shaft needs to be shortened by 40.50 mm) I have toyed with the idea of having a new shaft made, but so far not had any luck with a supplier here in Spain. So while waitng, over the next week or so I will be changing the Cam gear for an alloy one and also fitting a new distributor with electronic ignition, also a new set of core plugs.
With regards to the speedo drive there is a system(American obviously) using a gps driven unit that connects to your original speedo, so no problem realy, only the cost, it's about 300.00 U$, so that will have to join the list of wait till next year items.
