Advice needed on noise from new Spax damper and mounting

Post by gordini5 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 5:31 pm

After fitting new Spax G830 shocks and new mounting brackets there was low level noise transmitted on the near side front.

On taking it apart I think I've found the problem? :)

The new bracket and damper arrangement gives very little clearance between the damper shoulder and bracket. There is metal to metal contact evident where the paint has been damaged on both surfaces.

The wall of the poly bush is only 3mm, is it the right way then to grind away up to 3mm of the mounting plate? :?

Advice needed on noise from new Spax damper and mounting

Hi Gordini, the bushes in Spax do suffer from squishing quite quickly in service but as the loading is downwards on the lower mount and upwards on the top one, metal can be removed to provide clearance. It's not a very elegant engineering solution but does work ok.

Are you sure the 830 is a front damper? A quick google seems to show it listed as rear.

Either way, drop Tony Shakeshaft (Spax tech director and ex GTE owner) an email.
