SE6A: Front suspension arm suddenly snapped

Post by Villyman » Thu Oct 11, 2018 1:34 pm

Hi all!
3 days ago, while breaking rather gently, I heard a short strange noise. I thought it was my coil that had broken but it seemed to be the lower front suspension arm on the right hand suspension that had snapped … It just broke in the middle!
I think it must be metal fatigue (This is how it's called in Belgium) by torsion in the arm when braking.
Someone ever heard of this happening on Scimitars?
I took some pictures of it but it's just 2 pieces of arm ...

Can anyone tell if both front lower suspension arm left and right are interchangeable? I have a donorcar but I can't reach the right side while the lefthand side is easy to dismantle the arm.

Thanks a lot!
Greetings from Eeklo, Belgium!

Cheers, Tim.

Heard of a couple - almost certainly an impact at some point that’s weakened it.

Can anyone tell if the left and right lower front suspension arms are the same? It would save me a lot of time of I could use a left one on the right side.
Thanks, Tim.

Pretty sure front left is the same as rear right etc. I have 8 off 2 cars atm and that's how they look to me. Check GW parts list to be sure.
Where did it break ?

The part numbers are different IIRC but they look like they’re the same angles to me.

Had the same happen to my 6b. check your wishbone to chassis mounts whilst it's all apart, mine had cracked which caused the wishbone failure, change both as well as I found the other whilst looking okay had actually a hairline crack in the top of it which would have grown of course then failed like the other had done.
It's a good opportunity to rebush that side of the car as well of course

Hi all!
I now know the front lower arms aren't interchangeable! The bushing opening heartlines are not in line with the arm's heartlines. (Pretty unsure if this can be understood … )
Cheers, Tim.

Tim, you can use from opposing side but front becomes rear and rear becomes front when changing from nearside to offside

O my …. I thought the angles were different so didn't look very closely to them ... Thanks for the info, Mike!
Cheers, Tim.
