Steering rack oil

Hi, I’m painting and re furbing the rack on my SS1 1600, putting on new gaiters and track rod ends etc. When I cut off the old gaiters quite a lot of black, stinking oil poured out. Needless to say I didn’t save it to reuse! What grade of oil and how much do I need to refill it with?
Cheers.

Diff seals

Hi, I have the diff off the car, along with everything else! There seems to be a lot of oil on the outside so I am going to fit new driveshaft seals. It says in the Haynes manual that it’s a main dealer job due to special tools needed, is it? Also what’s the best oil to use when topping up?

QRG sill section SS1

Has anyone made sill covers in polished stainless? I had some years ago on my MGB and they looked quite smart.

SS1 number

split from SS1 records thread

Hi Jim, how will I find out my car number? The number on the chassis is 2187 and the number on the plate under the bonnet is 87E28B16974. There’s another number SCD 210974HF001117. Does that mean it car number 1117?
Cheers, Nigel.

Rear shock absorbers

Hi, I have emailed them and they don’t know if the cups will fit the SS1. He asked if it was using the Titan rack. Lost me there! I just might order a couple and see if they fit.
Cheers.

Thanks Jim, the originals have done over 100k now so I’m going through everything while it’s apart. Can I buy replacement spring and saddle from the suppliers?

Rear shock absorbers

Hi, I’m almost at the point of reassembly and was wondering which are the best shock absorbers to use. I have Spax ready to put on the front and was just wondering if I need to put Spax on the back. There will be new springs going on too and new bushes on everything. Luckily the wheel bearings are o...

Fuel line clips

Cheers Jim, will order some tonight. I was thinking of putting longer plastic fuel lines in to make accessing the rubber joints easier. What are your thoughts on this? The car is totally stripped now, I’m cleaning and painting the chassis, so access is easy. Anything else you can suggest to make lif...
