Sprouts!

Sprouts. The most heavenly green vegetable that is so wrongly cooked by so many misguided people. Just like me, many people have been presented with sprouts that have been boiled for hours (it seems), removing all the goodness, firmness and making them a horrid bitter, mushy mess. Then people say th...

Convert heads to unleaded or not?

Just do nothing, it will be fine. If paranoid, you will get some benefit from Castrol Valvemaster Plus which has an Octane improver. It may well make the engine happier and give you some peace of mind.

Latest job in the workshop, chassis repairs

Chassis black has now been done but having looked at the O/S corner, I have decided to bring that up to scratch too. It is showing the same bodge where the jacking point has been cut off and reboxed. The side rail has been forced to meet it by bending it. I will probably replace the whole side rail ...

More stupid questions: axle stands, fuel hose and...

Can anyone recommend a supplier of decent fuel hose that will last? Calling AJL Electronics ... Andy (AJL) has been selling Cohline hose for a while now and only sells one type - which is very much over-spec for the job but it’s a component you really don’t want to fail and it’s not really a job yo...

The completed repair section was then painted with weld through primer before being clamped into place. It is quite important to keep the heat to a minimum to prevent the foam burning or worse. I decided to use the thin metal technique which keeps distortion to a minimum in that case, but for me red...

Next the side rail and jacking point were welded up. I had intended to use a Rivnut in the corner but I wasn't happy with the fit. Remedy was to open the hole out and draw a 5/16" nut into it. Then it was welded up and the thread cleaned with a tap. The complete section was then test fitted again, f...

I didn't need the whole piece, so I just cut it down to four inches. The side rail was also cut to suit. Temporary offering up of parts was achieved with a Lidl twin magnet. Fabulous thing, I even used it to clean my eye when I suspected a piece of swarf in it. In case there are any nannies looking ...

This is how the repair section is supplied. The jacking point is a fully sealed box, undrilled for the bolt or the drain hole. It is galvanised which I feel is a negative because it has to be ground off for welding.

I've never found them to grip very well , instead I use separate terminals and covers as per OEM and then use the correct crimping tools . A superior joint is achieved You must be buying poor quality then. I have never had any trouble with the grip of insulated crimps. The unreliability myth comes ...

A quick and easy test is to replace the oil filter. Might save all that work! If not, you have a spare ready primed for next time.
