My SE5a

Firstly I'd like to point out that I don't do restoration, I like to get cars, bikes and trikes and make them into something different, something they have never been before sometimes even with something as simple as a paint job and a few other bits. I've always loved Mad Max since I was a kid and w...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

thanks Peter, and yes I have, a lovely bright blue one ! And the starter motor started the car once it engaged properly, all I have to do now is feed the wire properly into the back of the dash and reconnect. It's great to hear the engine running again, cars always seem properly broken or injured wh...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Thought I'd load some photos to help: This is where the remote solenoid was... 2 red/white wires, one brown wire. The slightly thicker RW wire on the right is the one that connected to the 12V spade connector on the starter motor. I have joined these together, took them apart for the photo http://i9...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Well that was interesting. Putting a wire from the 12v Spade connector to the +ve terminal immediately started the starter motor and made me jump too ! So it's something to do with the original 12v wire then - the scenario I have is that there is a red\white wire coming from the 12v spade connector ...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Excellent, will try that - so that would be both wires touching the +ve then ?, multi-meter ordered from Amazon at the princely sum of £8.50 - arriving Wednesday :-)

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Not at all at the moment :-) I used a jumper cable to go from the +ve Battery terminal on the battery to the large bolt/terminal on the starter motor that the other battery lead was attached to, ignition light came on when turned key, then nothing at all just silence. Checked the battery cable from ...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Incidentally Peter, thank you very much for your wiring diagrams - I wouldn't have got the dashboard back together and wired up correctly without it. I even have hazard lights working !

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Nothing as in absolutely nothing. Not a peep from the starter motor just silence. So took it all back off again and took a set of jumpleads and started it on the floor - it started fine twice. So checked the wiring - Positive to the battery is fine and on the correct bolt on the starter, 12V spade c...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

Whoohoo, starter motor out and replaced - the new one was small enough so I could get my hand round to seat the top bolt in. Much less time. SO happily connected up the battery lead wire (the big thick one) and the ignition wire (red\white). BUT tried to start it...nothing. According to the wiring d...

SE5a Starter Motor removal help badly needed

I've had to remove the splash shield that was riveted on - drilled out the rivets so have better access now. I just can't see the top bolt past the manifold - will have another go over the weekend. It's only this that's stopping me MOT'ing it.

Thanks for the advice, stupid question - are you going in from underneath the car or under the bonnet ? I can't feel any other bolt, but I'm probably not just getting my hand up high enough

cheers
Al
