Something worth checking is that the vac advance is working, it can stick if the engine has been stood at all and the timing will be retarded on all but full throttle.

Regarding timing, factory settings are not always accurate as every engine has different needs. I used to build engines and always advanced the timing until the engine pinked then knocked it back a little till it didn't. Retarded ignition causes run on as the exhaust valves get very hot, advance it ...

It probably does the job but it prevents the spare wheel from fitting in the front even with a low profile tyre. That's odd - I can get my spare in with no issues. I take is as your new car is a 1979 Red GTE you need the housing with the Filler cap, not the earlier sealed dome type??. Mark Yes I need the one with a filler cap but not the very tall one with a reservoir built in. But..... I can always fit a header tank with filler cap if need be so either reall...

What I need is a standard Essex thermostat housing, mine has one of those with a metal 'pot' on it and I cant get the spare wheel in, any one got one to spare please

What's the minimum gap between the top of a trumpet and the airbox top. 1.5 x trumpet internal diameter ?? I replaced the rubber pipe from the inlet manifold to the curly pipe that goes to gearbox and problem solved for now.
