38DGAS air/vacuum pipes

Thanks for all the useful knowledge guys and offer for phone support from AJL, as usual spot on. Thanks especially to Martin who came round with a spare carb, dizzy and other bits, spent his Sunday afternoon helping nail down the cause of a long running problem! (Carb related but with ignition sympt...

38DGAS air/vacuum pipes

Thanks guys. I doubt that's my problem as the car is undriveable at the moment, the misfire has got much worse recently. But that's for another post rather than go off topic!

38DGAS air/vacuum pipes

Right I've done my bit and searched the forum, can't see any evidence of this being discussed in any detail. I'm chasing a misfire and I noticed a definite pause in the engine when I touch a small pipe on the carb. It's a new 38DGAS from AJL. My questions: First: What does the short pipe connecting ...

Tax Exempt

Sorry for jumping in late here, but I'm starting to think I'm tax exempt and just haven't noticed. (D'oh!). The https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles website clearly states: Vehicles exempt from vehicle tax You do not need to pay vehicle tax if your vehicle was built on or before 31 December 1977. So...

Thanks Phil,

Mark.

Fuel pump relay.

Hi Guys, I'm chasing an annoying misfire and I'm wondering if a relay that pulls in the fuel pump and ignition might be breaking contact momentarily. I have a Durite 180 amp relay and that's probably overkill for a furl pump and ignition. It's been there since I've had the car. Any sugestions what c...

Headlight relays - an alternative??

Hi guys, I burned out another set of lucas copy switches a while back and was thinking it's about time I fitted headlight relays. But I'm not a fan of the original switches so I sought an alternative. I've purchased 6 chrome toggle switches rated for 25a at 12V, which should be plenty. 6 because I w...

Car won't start.

Update: Accuspark are checking the unit I returned but have been ominously silent since I returned it 2 weeks ago. I don't want to hang around so I bought a powerspark unit and matching coil. That runs a treat, but I'd like to know what accuspark say. I'll let you know. Thanks for all the help and s...

Car won't start.

Ok, so problem narrowed down to a single component, which I'll replace and report back. The problem is consistent, firing on just one cylinder this morning. Warming just the electronic ignition pickup in the photo, not the cap or anything else, and the engine fires right up on all 6. :D I agree Phil...

Car won't start.

Hi Everyone, Yes, that's exactly what it is! So all voodoo has been banished! I now know the black box is a relay for the fuel pump. Obvious really. The red wire to the fusebox is straight from the battery +ve, which then feeds the relay through a fuse. The other fuses aren't connected, but Phil is ...

Hi Jim,

The thing with the clear lid is an inline fuse holder I fitted that takes power from the ignition. It sits behind the ignition and feeds the fuel pump.

Car won't start.

Here's a photo of the voodoo box. I'm worried I may have captured it's soul and it will hex me forever. Are these known to fail or should I focus on the coil/ee? The ee was changed fairly recently as was the dizzy cap. But the coil has been there since I've had the car. [image 20180328_215920.jpg ][...

Car won't start.

It's working! Yay! So what was (or rather is) the problem? Hard to say. I poured some of Tesco's finest unleaded into the carb and it made absolutely no difference. Firing on one cylinder only. So I thought I'd try something.... I borrowed the missus hairdryer (risky I know) and gently warmed up the...

A bit more info: First, I tried bypassing the existing wiring with a wire from the +ve of the battery to the +ve side of the coil. It made no difference, exactly the same. Thanks for the suggestion Roger. Second, I've no idea what sort of Accuspark it is, but it's a blue coil. I fried one set of poi...
