V6 essex timing gear

Meant to post abit on this earlier in the week, the stuff I ordered from Essex Engines was delivered next day and really can’t fault them.

Jacking points

The cross member of the main chassis is what I’d be inclined to use, but it’s tubular. Is there a risk of crushing it? The box sections are too off centre for me to jack up and put stands under both sides at the same time.

Thanks,
Chris

Fuel line

Hello, Looking at getting fuel lines to replace the unknown stuff currently fitted, I know that AJL has the best stuff available, but which size and how much will I need? Any special clips/fitting to get at the same time? I was going to get some stainless steel hose clips whilst I was at it. Thank y...

Jacking points

Hi all,

Where do people jack the car up from to get axle stands under it? Anywhere I look seems too fagile to do this except the designed spots for each corner.

Thanks,
Chris

V6 essex timing gear

Hello, I ordered my timing gear from www.essexengines.com having seen a reference to it somewhere on here and they were very helpful on the phone. Got plenty of advice including take the opportunity to change some of the engine plugs whilst I had the cover off. Price was good for the gear (get both ...

Sorry for the slow response. For the extra effort, I’d remove the lines and take the opportunity to have a quick look at the fuel pump too.

New door locks

Thanks Joe, that’s on my ever growing list of things to buy now!

Another tangent from me, is there a list which shows which bits are compatible with bits from other cars to save me asking you all lots of questions?

Thanks again,
Chris

Oil pump

Hello, I’ve found that I need to change my timing gear as it’s of the fibre variety. Whilst I’m ‘in there’, I was thinking of looking at what else I can do and my mind went to the oil pump. Is this a problem item? Should ai be looking at something like the Burton high pressure pump as an upgrade or ...

Ignition lock is shared in common with an MG Midget. I just took a look at Midget ignition locks and they do look the same, but there’s a lot of different model numbers knocking around. Are they all the same? Is it the whole mechanism, i.e. the steering lock as well, or just the ignition lock? Than...

New gear kit sourced and on its way
Hello,

Just took the fuel pump off and looked at the timing gear and it looks like a fibre gear. Fibre’s clearly a no-no, steel seems to have some issues, so what’s the drawback with alloy?

What gear type did you get Dave and where from?

Thanks,
Chris

New door locks

I was slow up the uptake there, BL is British Leyland. That’s great, new handles ordered now. I just need to sort out the ignition now. I seem to be struggling to get any response by email from the two main parts suppliers, I guess I’ve got to find an opportunity to phone them whilst at work. Is thi...
